Planted in 2003, and farmed by the Dierberg family, Drum Canyon Vineyard is located on the eastern edge of the famed Sta. Rita Hills winegrowing region, where cool, coastal breezes help to produce a beautifully structured Pinot Noir, with velvety tannins and pure notes of pomegranate, dark cherry and clove.

Winemaker Notes

In 2016, the cool, marine-influenced climate of Drum Canyon Vineyard resulted in a supple and velvety wine, with enticing aromas of raspberry, cassis and flowers. On the palate, impeccably balanced acidity brightens the flavors of Bing cherry and sweet berries, with hints of vanilla and oak accentuating the vibrant fruit and carrying the wine to a lingering, well-textured finish.

Production

The 2016 growing season provided another excellent vintage in the Sta. Rita Hills. Warm weather in February was moderated by cold night temperatures, which delayed budbreak until early March. Ideal weather during flowering and set was followed by somewhat cooler temperatures during the growing season, with bursts of warm spells allowing for optimal ripening of the fruit. Crop yields were average, and the berry size was small-to-medium, offering lovely concentration and complexity.

The 2016 Sta Rita Migration Pinot Noir Drum Canyon Vineyard is on the sweeter side for a Pinot Noir, which makes it a perfect choice for someone who would like to start drinking more red wines. I am typically a drinker of white wine, and I was pleasantly surprised when I poured a glass of this varietal. It is smooth, just sweet enough, and not dry. It provides a taste of grapes and fruity notes, and is incredibly smooth. My husband and I enjoyed this for a date night in, and we had a great time assessing the flavor palate and comparing it to other wines we typically drink. Again, if you prefer sweeter wines, this is a great red that gives you the full body profile of a red, but a touch of sweetness.

Want to elevate an evening at home in a snap? Open a bottle of 2016 Migration Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir Drum Canyon Vineyard. It's vibrant, refreshing and incredibly smooth. Even those who lean toward white wine (like me) will enjoy sipping on the Pinot Noir before, during and after a meal. I recently invited my parents over for dinner and served the wine as an apéritif. As soon as my homemade soppressata and fennel grandma pie emerged from the oven, we were all ready for a second pour. Though you might not expect it, the bright, crisp wine complemented the Sicilian-style pizza perfectly. Needless to say, we gladly finished the bottle!
